The Shanghai Boom  I came across this article ( Jan 1935 edition of Fortune) by chance. It is definitely one of my best harvests from the Net. Although the language is a bit politically incorrect by today's values, it is surprisingly liberal by the standards of the thirties. The author correctly foresaw the tumultuous events about to overtake China. Written from an American perspective, we see the kind of patronizingly benevolent attitude that Americans tends to exhibit when it comes to China - as true today as it was in the thirties.
